I'm new and don't have a whole lot of shops completed yet, but I'm not sure if I want to do another cell phone shop in the International district or Chinatown of a major city. I don't fit in there. I did two in one day. The client disputed one and questioned the other...the only two shops I've been called on to provide more feedback. The good news was that despite being out of place, the client didn't ID me.

I don't mind the burger FF shops. My kids like the food and I don't mind it. I did 5 in 8 days. I'm getting it down. I can usually write down the timings in the drive thru easy enough. Inside I take a crossword puzzle book and work on crossword puzzles (NOT!) while I'm eating. In reality, I have cryptic notes to remind me what I need to look at written next to the clues. The cooresponding answer is written in that space for that clue. I'm getting pretty quick on the report.

I just completed my first apartment shop. I really enjoyed the shop and the report...I like narratives. I got a 10 on the report too! I definitely will do those again.

I'm looking forward to my first bank shops in August. I have one locally and then I'm taking a day trip to hit 5 in one day. In between banks and driving, I'm hoping to hit some gas shops (to provide the gas for the trip) and FF shops (to cover my meals) and a grocery shop (to get my foot in the door).

I hate doing apartment shops, too many forms, etc. but telling them it isn't enough space compared to my house was totally true. I love french fry shops but my forms are a form as in 1. I don't like pretending to be a bride and have to take off my rings as I have 4 on my ring finger, wedding,1st and 10th Ann. and engagement ring. I haven't taken them off for 7 years and I am not going to do it for 20 bucks either, lest I call that big red truck out with gorgeous men in all blue and stirrup pants to cut them off after I swell up. I don't do car shops anymore, used to do them 8 years ago but hiding my tape recorder, sound problems made me decide to quit. I also hate shops that take me to real trendy boutiques and require I buy something and return it and all for 15 bucks. I don't dress trendy much so it's hard for me to talk the talk and walk the walk in there. Plus my kids would be saying "mommy, why are you wearing that shirt with your tummy sticking out" or "I can see your m$$k when you lean over." That's what happens when you refuse to bottle feed. I also don't like the fee the home improvement shops offer, but feel very comfortable returning stuff there. I do a lot of my home improvement stuff here as my husband is not very handy and would rather weight train. I don't like restaurants with bar shops, I don't drink and sometimes wonder when I go to order a lemonade if they spotted me. I have taken them though as my family eats out several times a week anyways.

I love the shower shops myself. The pay is great, and I get reimbursed for my ciggs. I don't actually take the shower, but maybe I should, since "appearing to" takes as long as a shower itself.

The one shop I hate, and will never do again is the electronics/appliance store where you evaluate 2 depts and get paid
.5 for each.

After listening to you guys not being too happy about the home improvement shops, I was surprised to find that for me they really weren't a big deal (but then, I wasn't carrying something heavy around for awhile, either).

I LIKE the bank shops, I find them fun and interesting, and I've never had a bad experience with them (knock on wood) . . . well, unless you count the time I got into a fender-bender, but that wasn't the fault of the SHOP!

I've had good AND bad experiences with the apartment shops. Some of them have been a piece of cake, and others a royal pain in the neck. A lot of it depends on the availability of your target, and how good of a job they do. I recently had a shop where the woman just stood there and literally said practically NOTHING to me . . . that was easy to report (because there was NOTHING to report!!): "This woman failed to perform nearly every task expected of her."

I'm not kidding . . . this really happened!

After hearing you guys talk about the drive-through and walk-in fast food shop, I could see how ridiculous it is, so I took one only because it was a walk-in only. That was reasonable. I can't see myself doing both, though.

There's no way I would do a time share shop. You couldn't PAY me enough to do one of those.

I like the idea of taking no purse, wallet, etc. with you on a fitness center shop--smart thinking!

I've met some people doing this, though, that I feel really bad to have deceived. Some of these people really put their all into their customer service skills, and I've seen some outstanding performers out there who give 110% to their job. I make sure they get the accolades they deserve in my report, but I still am leery about running in to them again . . . you know, they'll see me out in public somewhere and point their finger and yell . . .

"YOU!!! You're that woman who made me work my tail off, and you were LYING TO ME the whole time!!"

Happily shopping the Portland, Oregon metro area!

There are a few types of shops I will never do again. Well, maybe never. LOL. Bank shops asking you to tell them you have such a large amount. I hate lying. I feel so low when I leave those types of shops. I would probably do another one if I got desperate. LOL.
Another one is grocery shops for less than ten dollars. The pretending like you are an airhead and forgetting that item under the cart when you just unloaded an almost empty cart gives you away as a shopper. Plus the fact that you have visited every department in the store gives you away.
One that I like doing because of the pay but hate being there is the funeral home shops. Everytime I leave one I wonder when I am going to really need this.

I found another one I won't do anymore! Gas Station/convenience store. The description that was posted did not fully explain the work involved. I signed up for two and the ms company called to see if I would take a third. I spent 7 hours on three $12 shops and ruined my tape measure to boot! One took me nearly 2 hours to complete! What they need for these shops is a draftsman It'll be a miracle if they can make out the sketches I made

I do like the regular convenience stores though. Nice pay plus expense reimbursement. They pay for my diet coke addiction!

I am sorry you had so many problems with these shops Karen. I have done six of them. I agreed to do two more after they called me and were so nice. I am a sucker. These shops are a little far for me but I cannot tell anyone no. The first one I did took a little over an hour but the rest went alot faster after I knew what I was looking for. The only problem I had was the sketching, but when I called the company with another question I asked them whether they had to be to scale. They told me no. I enjoyed them but did not enjoy the drive. When I was going to the last three I was in a major car wreck and had to finish them later. The company was very understanding of that.

I signed up for one of those HR shops where you pretend to be looking for a job at a department store. Never again! I hate interviews! I don't know what I was thinking.

I hate the grocery shops, too many questions and too many departments to shop for too little pay. Same thing with a K-Mart I did recently.

One that I like, even though the pay is ridiculously low, is the cinnamon roll shop. Even tho it only pays $3.50 plus reimbursement, I have an excuse to blow my diet and eat one of the cinnamon rolls. To each his own I guess. :)

I did a FF shop recently in a dorm food court. I didn't know it was in a dorm when I took it and I stood out like a sore thumb. Everyone else there paid using their student number account. I was the only one paying in cash. I still don't think they had a clue I was the shopper but I felt weird and the food was not that great anyway. Also parking was a nightmare on campus!

Too funny you mention campus shops -- I have 3 in the next 2 weeks but I work at a university so they're great for me. But I cannot imagine WHO would/could do these since parking is near impossible if you could even figure out how to get to the establishments!

I will think twice and thrice before I do another open checker patron count at a movie theater which requires me to be there through all time slots the movie is shown. Last one took 12 hours and I still didn't get the box office ticket count report

1. FF shops (I don't go on MY time, why would I go on someone else's!)
2. Bank shops
3. "Required purchase" shops that do not offer a reimbursement
4. Pizza Shops
5. Retail shops where you have to "interact with 10+ staff members

Oh, and 1 more thing, AmberHolly, I will take your share of the timeshare shops!

I never do FF or gas station/convenience stores, and I will never again do Campus food court shops because of the parking problems. [:p] I donít think Iím being picky but as stated by someone else, if you donít ordinarily frequent the above mentioned shops why would you want to as a mystery shopper?

During my first week in the industry I selected a $10 ice cream shop out in the backhills of West Virgina, because I could avoid paying the toll road on my way to North Carolina on a business trip. So here's what happened... I had more than one shop along the way, and had to get to a restaurant in time for their breakfast., so I was going a little fast. I got blue lights behind me swirling around encouraging me to pull off to the side, and mr. officer says since I didn't have a license, my car would have to stay there and I would have to find a ride home (I'm 300 miles at this point). So I call a friend to call a friend to come by and get me. He's an hour out but it ends up being two. He gets in the car with me and drives it across the state border - just 3 miles, then gets back in his car with his wife and we all continue on to NC. I do my first couple shops and my friends continue on by themselves. Then I get lost in the back hills and drive 20 miles on a one lane road that keeps getting thinner and thinner... where's the yellow line go? Finally after realizing that it's almost gravel, I pull into civilization - a log cabin selling coke and cigarettes to ask for directions. An hour later, just as they were getting ready to close, I find my ice cream shop and order me a big ol' swirly one. Well I'll never take that shop again!

You hate lying? Aren't you in the wrong business? It's weird that I am so honest in my personal and professional life, but look people in the eye and lie through my teeth for MS.
I agree with you that the every department grocery stores are the worst. I did one, and promptly cancelled the other one I had scheduled. I recently did another grocery store where I had to make a return and ask only one question of the cashier. So much easier.

Adult Entertainment!!! I did both a retail and video location next door. I thought it would be one of the more suburban "fun" chains. When I walked in the painted door, I looked around and just about died. It was hardcore goth!! And I looked like Suzy Homemaker. The only thing that saved me was community theater experience fifteen years ago - On with the Show! I thought to myself - these guys don't know what a BAD GIRL I am under my demure conservative clothes. I had to make a purchase and do an impulse buy while the sale was being rung up for an integrity check. I left the stores, got in my car and hyperventilated! It paid great, but I don't know if I have the guts to do it again.

I had never heard of the shower shops, and now porn shops. I guess living in a small rural town in WI, I would never get either. I will never do another shop in a metro area that I am not familiar with. the other day when I got to the location I didn't know if I was safe to leave my car. Then the store was re-located in the basement because they apparently had had too many break ins and gave up and put it out of reach for break-ins. Everything in the store was either behind a counter or wired down. I did the shop in only the exact amount of required time and left. I went to my car locked it wrote down some notes and got the heck out of there. And the thing is this was a white area of town. I guess the gangs are pretty strong in that area. I'll leave that shop for the locals next time.

I won't do anymore health clubs either. Too much time doing the shop and then the report is even longer. Besides I am somewhat handicapped from a motor vehicle accident, because parking was very limited I had to park in the handicapped stall. Now would the person have believed me if they had seen me go to my car parked in handicapped that I was truely interested in a health club membership.

I would love to do a timeshare, but there aren't any near where I live. But then again I do them for money when I go on vacation. I don't do any for less than $90 and I doubt the shopping companies pay that kind of money to do them. I have been on so many, some of them I could give the presentation. Being a talker, I have to shut up or I never get out of there.

I will never do 2 shops again:

The one where you go to the home decorating store and have to lug around an oversized item until an associate asks to get you a cart to put it in. I did this shop 1 time and the directions said to lug it around for up to 30 minutes, waiting for an associate to ask to help you with it. I lugged it for the 30 minutes, no one asked me help me, so I put it down after 30 minutes. That company would not pay me, because they had changed the guidelines in between the time I choose the job and the day I performed the job. My mistake, so in turn, I will not do that job. Now, they want you to lug the thing UNITL someone offers to help you! No thanks. For $10.00?

The other shop I will not be doing again is at the infamous Pet Store. The one where you have to visit 6 different departments and ask each associate a specific, different question. You then have to document the associate's response and your entire conversation. If you deviate from the question they give you, you won't be paid, be careful of this one! All this for... you got it... a $10 REIMBURSEMENT! No thanks.

I guess misery loves company.
All 5 pages have given me so many laughs (& a little Education as well)
I don't have much of a choice in the midwest.
However the infamous Home Improvement Store has had, in my area, reasonable things to haul out & in. I always check on the item that is the target, before I commit. Anything BIG & its "Pass"
I liked the grocery shops, but it was probably a different company. I only had three Depts. The Grocery stores left my area. I got both paid & + reimbursed.Perhaps they changed the form, reduced the fee & added more Depts.
As to FF, I only did the well-know company to prove to myself that I really could do all those timings. A few locations in the country do not have Drive thru (located in Mall). That made it somewhat better. However, I really hated what I had to order.
Actually there is a MS company that has a FF chain shop, I actually like the food, the form is only 1 page (no multiples of timings) I get a small fee & reimbursement, they pay very regular & are VERY NICE to work with.
The shower shop. I have done as others do, turn on the water & sit & write out notes on the shop.Occasionally, I have done it very early in the morning & actaully have taken the shower. This location is in a nice suburban area & has high security in the hall & dead bolts on the shower room doors. The first time I did this shop, I went with my trusty mace in hand!
I have a dog & can use the reimbursement on the Pet shop. HOWEVER, I LET IT SIT, TIL I GET A CALL & A SMALL FEE IS ADDED.
I guess I was lucky on the fitness shop, as I had a very nice, genteel fellow & he was finished with his presentation in 22 minutes. He called me later & left a message on my answering machine, but that was it!!
