Hi Susan! I just wanted to let you know that I use Ares to download music. It is awesome! I am not sure of the address but if you just put in a search for "Ares" it will come up and you can download it. It is a shareware program.

I just read that Kazaa has more virus-ridden songs than good songs. It was something like only 43% of the songs were safe. I just wanted to warn you away from that one.

I'm interested in sites where you can legally pay for downloads and wondered if any of these sites meet that requirement. I don't want to sound like I'm scolding anyone who choose the free sites, it's just I don't want to do that myself.

I've heard that Napster is back up and legal now and have seen the ads for Pepsi which refer to a site, so I wondered if anyone had any experience with any of these types of sites.

I use winMX to download mp3's for free, it's peer-to-peer file sharing, and I also go to the mp3 channels on mIRC (usually on undernet). I've been lucky, I guess, never have gotten any viruses or corrupted files from either place, though I suppose it can happen. The only problem with winMX is that if you don't share files in return, some of the people you download from will block you, so I have a small folder set up with a few really good songs in it that I leave on the computer to be shared. And you can limit the number of people who can get files from you at any one time (I'm on turtle-slow dial-up so I limit it to one upload at a time).

If you want to be "legit" & pay for your music, I just found this in my new computer magazine. The listed the top 5 in order of ratings...

1) Apple iTunes Music Store www.itunes.com .99/song
2) Rhapsody 2.1 www.listen.com $9.95/month
3) MusicMatch Jukebox 8.2 www.musicmatch.com .99/song
4) Napster 2.0 www.napster.com .99/song
5) BuyMusic www.buymusic.com .79 - $1.29/song

You can download music at walmart.com for .88 a song. I haven't tried it but stumbled across it when I was shopping online.

Napster is selling prepaid download cards. Fred Meyer has them $15 for 15 songs.

www.singingfish.com is a free one

I get tons of hits from this site going to my website all the time and learned about it that way. It's a great one!

I have some cards with music downloads from various sites for someone who wants them. I got them at SXSW. As I have two of each of the different cards, I would be happy to pass along the codes, link and info to two different people. Just email me.

2 free songs here but I do not know about the music as I do not download music. So you have to go and see for yourself. Was in my swag bag @ SXSW compliments of Dentyne. I kept the gum, you all can have the music, lol.
