I hate to give you a "depends" answer but I have to.

With some companies, you can decline a particular assignment or even several with no negative consequences. Some will ask for a reason why you turned the job(s) down- it being too far from you, no mileage or drivetime paid- I even told one mystery shop company that they just didn't pay enough. Even if they do not ask for a reason, I always try to email my boss or the scheduler to let them know why I can't do a particular job. I'm part-timing for a couple of companies that fall into this category.

Other companies aren't quite so forgiving. If you turn down one assignment for any reason, you stop getting offers entirely. Or you don't get the additional hours/assignments that now go to someone else who didn't say no. I've been there as well.

Your best bet is to do exactly what you just did: come here and ask people who work for the company what their experience is. You're on the right track.

Thanks for the information, Robert. I appreciate your help. Advantage S&M is the company I was specifically inquiring about. I would like to get on with them and just need to understand a bit more what exactly the difference is between the job titles. What I would like is to be able to look at assignment postings and accept the ones that I can fit into my day/week/month or to have a somewhat permanent part time merchandising assignment. I'm guessing that what I want is the "Retail Reset Merchandiser".

I'm on the retail sales merchandiser team and to help out i'll tell you what i do. I specifically service mars candy and wrigley gum in Walmarts and large outlets in my district which is large. I work full time-40 hrs a week. I have 65 stores that i must complete in a month. Others have double that amount, mine is alot of driving in between them because my territoty is big. On Monday morning i have to be ready to go to work by 5:45 am because i have an hour long conferance call. As soon at the call is done i fly out the door to be at my first store by 8:00 am. We have to be checked into our first store each day by that time. I have a schedule of stores each day that i have to follow. i'm given a ppc to scan mechandise, answer questions regarding how much freight i put out,how much is in the stockroom, talking to managers, out of stock items, cutting new items in,getting store managers to want to add the new items in their store, getting displays into the store etc. I have goals of so many displays i have to get into each store. Store managers deal with hundreds of vendors each month,so getting them to add more displays can be really hard, alot them don't want them at all! All the displays are shipped to my house (and there's ALOT of them) and i have to have a car full when i leave. I always have a display with me in each store-it's required. The schedule i'm given calculates how much time i'm in the store, distance between stores, when i should be checked into each store, driving time etc. And this is just part of what i do,there's more. I love what i do,but i've been in retail for many years. So if you want a part time job where you want to just add a store or two this may not be for you. There are other part time jobs at Advantage where you can pick a job on a first come first serve basis, but so far it's not being a retail sales merchandiser.

KaritoWA: Hello,

I to work Advantage S&M, love working for this company, always have work in when I click in their site. I am booked for weeks now, alway checking in to see if there is more. I work for four more merchandising companies, where I live work is hard to get,or find. If it was for Advantage, and my other merchandising company, I just won't be working. I live in the U.P of Michigan, where work is so hard to find. I am always looking for another company to work for, I love being a merchandiser. I love the way you can schedule, around your own schedule time, and still get the projects done on time. I have been working for Advantage now a year, and hope more years with them.

work is hard to come by in my area too. that is why I feel really fortunate to be able to choose jobs through Advantage. They are like my reliables, I can count on them for work and have been for two years now. I also work for two others that you do all that is assigned to your dashboard and I REALLY like both of those companies alot. with both of them my store is within 1 mile of my home. With Advantage I do go within a 45 mile radius if I need to, but they have alot of work within 5 miles of here. I love merchandising too.

KaritoWA,
Can you tell me which job category to sign up for. All of the Advantage job titles are getting confusing. What I would like sounds like exactly what you do! I want to be able to choose assignments, with dates and distance, that fit with my schedule. Are you penalized at all for not taking certain assignments or is it all up to you what assignments you take and when?

Retail Project Merchandiser (710)is the one that I was hired for. No you do not get penalized for not taking all assignments. There will more than likely be others in your area taking assignments as well, so you need to check often. You can choose any assignments that are on your "Dashboard" and sometimes my DM will send emails looking for people to do jobs out of the area or sometimes he calls and asks me to pick up a job that someone else has canceled. Good luck to you.

Sherry, when i was hired about 4 months ago, they told me that they still go by that system. I went for the interview and then they started the paper work and went thru the process of checking my driving record after the interview. When i passed the driving record check (which took about a week) then they sent the formal hire papers. I'm not sure, but maybe you might consider letting the person know who will be doing the interview when you get there. Hope it goes well for you.

Kelly, I really apreciate you telling me all about your current job. Here's the thing- I recently interviewed with AS&M for the same postion as you and every time I talk to them the hourly rate goes down- now it is not much pay at all. And the route has 4X as many stops as you have and is only part time. Do you get mileage? Can I try and get them to pay more money? Do you get raises?

Ann i was told that there are no pay raises. One person i know has worked for the company over 15 years and has only received less than a quarter raise in that time and it was to move to doing this job. Everyone else that i've talked has never received a raise in all the years they have worked for them. You do get a gas card and also wear and tear on your car. The wear and tear on your car is put on your paycheck every two weeks. The gas card is like a master card and it is loaded on the first of every month. Depending on your car,it may last two weeks or three. They want you to pay for at least 2 tanks of gas yourself because of the weekends when you don't work and still have gas left in your car. As far as i know no two people get the same amount because we sign an agreement that we are not allowed to tell anyone how much we are paid hourly, gas allowance or wear and tear allowance. It depends on your route, the type of car you drive and how many miles to the gallon it gets(they look it up). I have talked with other AS&M people who did talk with the DM hiring them right at first and they were able to get a better hourly rate. I'm suprised that it keeps going down when you talk to them. I would remind them of the first rate they quoted you if possible and go up from there. They do have very nice benefits etc. and that's why many people love working for the company. Plus if you get a good DM it's worth working for them. Hope it turns out well for you. Keep me posted.

I was called by a DM looking to fill a position in my area. I was driving at the time and pulled over in a parking lot and took notes on everything that was being said. I was quoted 28 hour a week and above the average on hourly wages, thought it sound great and agreed to an interview.

When I got to the interview the hours had dropped to 20 and the money went down too, when I questioned the hours and pay, I was told that he never mentioned them to me that it must have been someone else in the company, I told him I had only talked to him, and here are the notes. Needless to say this was a red flag.

I already work for the side of Advantage that use to be called RMX. He said that I could still work that side, but could not go over 32 hours a week combined. The first money offered was 4.00 more than I make with them now, and I was gonna jump on it, but then..............

AnnCamp, Have you heard anything back? My stores that i do are Walmarts and large outlets-like Fred Meyer,QFC,Safeways and Albertsons. The smaller store routes-(convienence stores as they call them) have alot more stores in their routes because they usually only spend out 45 minutes or less in them and their closer together. In my Walmarts, i spend 2 to 2 1/2 hours in each store. The larger outlets i spend 45 to 120 minutes depending on the store.

Maralyn,

When I started reading your post about above average wage I was wondering if you were posting under the right company. But by the end of your post, I see that you weren't.
