With gas hitting near $4.00 a gallon already in Chicagoland, it isn't hard to imagine that we'll be well over that $5 by Memorial Day. Do many of you get paid at least something for gas allowance from your jobs? If so, it's really biting into that bigtime, and if you figure it out, the cost of maintaining the vehicle is going into the negative amounts now. What will companies do if they experience merchandisers in numbers that quit because we no longer can afford to travel out of town for them??

Well it is $3.69 now, so it went up 14 cents in two days. I don't do any merchandsing other than in area within 5 miles of me. Having a merchandising route always seemed too much like a "real job' to me.

I gave up MSing & stick with merchandising because of the gas. However the closest store is 15mi & the furtherest is 45. No gas or mileage allowance but I need to work somewhere & any job I had wouldn't be any closer. The one that is 45 mile away is for a different company & they pay more per hr so that makes up for the extra mileage/gas; at least a little. Gas was $3.53-$3.55.

It cost me over $12 to fill up my riding lawn mower yesterday. This place is so dang big, I had to go back for more gas to finish the mowing. I'm thinking about hauling in rock to replace the grass!!

I have really enjoyed MS and Merch. I will have to make changes. I will no longer accept weak pay. At $3.95 and rumored to pass $4.00 by this weekend doing low paying work is no longer and option.

Locally, it hit 3.799 Down the highway to the nearest town, which is 18 miles away, the prices are now at 3.999. This town has always sold gas at 20 cents less than my town. The tables have turned for some reason. It doesn't seem to make any difference how much we trim our travelling, the prices continue to sky-rocket.

I think it was $3.69 when DH filled up yesterday. Fortunately, I have not had the need to do much driving lately, so, my vehicle just needs about one fill-up per month.

However, I will be making a trip to the Metroplex this weekend, about 300 miles, round-trip....so, that may be a rude awakening for me.

I am changing my driving habits a bit, though! I prefer to travel back roads, take the interesting routes, make fun stops, etc....but, now, I map out the shortest route and go....not as much fun!

Clare, you mentioned the Metroplex. I live in Plano, just north of Dallas, and gas today is around 3.69 for regular here. It's interesting that on Saturday I filled up for $3.48. There are some high-end stations (Chevron, specifically) that are already at $3.75. Yuck...

On our evening news segment last evening, there was a segment regarding the use of "premium" or "super" gas. The information was provided by the National safety council. It stated that many people are wasting their money on these two grades of fuel. They do not give better performance to the engine,or, higher mileage per gallon. These gas guzzlers that people buy that state in their manuals to use these fuels, are recommending them. The only time one needs to use this type of fuel is when they hear their engines begin to ping. Then fill it up with the higher octance gas, and switch back to the lesser. By using the lesser octane fuels a person can save over a $100 or more per year. With fuel prices rising at a ridiculous rate, any money saved at the pump is worth a try.

$3.59 at what used to be the "cheap" station. Not any more.

Our gas here in southeastern Michigan hit the $4 mark a few days ago. Yesterday when I was out, the lowest price I saw was $4.37! OUCH!

Way to bleeping much. I honestly don't even look anymore. It's killing us, and we have cut down on the driving as much as we can. My husband works 40 miles away and goes to school during the day, so he makes that round trip twice a day. I'm trying to figure out how to take 3 little kids on the bus all summer. We're still paying off a van that we barely drive anymore, choosing to crowd all 3 kids into the back of our smaller car.
