I first heard of greek yogurt today on the Oprah Winfrey Show. In comparison to regular yogurt it is higher in protein, lower in carbohydrates,as well as being thicker and creamier. It does have less calcium than regular yogurt which is not good. I went to the Fage Yogurt website store locator and discovered that it is sold in a couple of Kroger stores that are not too far away. The price will be the main factor as to whether I buy this yogurt. |

| I've seen several recipes that use Greek yogurt and they say if you can't get it, drain regular yogurt in a cheesecloth and use that instead. Guess it's a lot thicker. |

| Janette, if you like sour cream, you will love Greek yogurt. It is so creamy and rich...a little bit can go a long way, making a good value for the dollar. Add vanilla or whatever you like for variety, if the plainness gets boring. I haven't purchased the sugary, preservative-laden stuff in years and the cost, when you get down to it, is about the same. |

I've never been much of a plain yogurt person, but I love sour cream. When I've eaten plain yogurt in the past I've stirred in jellies, jams and preserves. I can still do that, but it will be of the sugarfree variety this time. My mom bought me a jar of sugarfree grape jelly,so as soon as I can get some of the Greek yogurt I am all set. |

| I think you'll like it, Jan; I couldn't stand plain yogurt, either, but the Greek yogurt is so much richer and creamier that there is really no comparison. Enjoy! |

| You also might enjoy making some of the Greek salads (always seemed more like a cold sauce to me) that use yogurt and cucumber as the main ingredients. Mighty yummy. |

| I get the Fage at Costco. It's $6.59 for a 1000g container. Besides eating it as yogurt, you can substitute it for sour cream in any recipes, or on a baked potato. |

The local Walmart carries Yoplait greek yogurt. A 6 ounce container costs a dollar. I really like the texture of the yogurt. I bought the bluebery flavor, and thought that the blueberry flavor tasted artificial. Guess I like when there are visible bits of fruit in the yogurt. I'm not sure if Yoplait makes a plain greek yogurt. I did not see any on the shelf. Somehow I think I'd like the plain yogurt with sugarfee jams or jellies stirred into it better. For those of you who have tried both the Fages and Yoplait brands of greek yogurt, which do you like better? |

I prefer the Fage brand. The Yoplait has gelatin in it to give a thicker texture, Fage is the real deal and just has a better "mouth feel" to me.
Have you tried Oikos or Brown Cow? I like those when I can't find Fage. I think liking plain yogurt, regardless of brand, may be an acquired taste, but it's easy to stir in pureed or chopped fruit, spreads, nuts, honey, Grape Nuts, chocolate flakes, etc.
If you can tolerate Grape Nuts, you can try layering them with the yogurt and some fruit, and then refrigerate overnight...the cereal softens and the flavors marry...makes a great breakfast or lunch. |

I saw the Oikos brand in Kroger's today. It was about twice the cost of the Yoplait one. Maybe once I get more jobs underway I will splurge on Oikos. |

I've used the Oikos brand lately for Tandoori (an Indian curry dish) that was fabulous. To make a cheating variation, mix your favorite curry blend with a single-serving of plain yogurt and pour over thinly sliced boneless, skinless breast meat. Let marinate at least an hour. Then place the slices on a broiler pan that has been sprayed with canola oil (Pam) and broil in preheated oven until yogurt starts to brown at the edges of the chicken. With thin slices you don't have to turn the chicken over for it to be done and this way the yogurt remains on the chicken when you serve it.
Can also mix in finely chopped onion and minced garlic for a stronger flavor. Serve with dahl (seasoned lentils) and rice or pilau (rice cooked with onion, cardamon, cinnamon, and raisins).
I have also substituted the sour cream in stroghanoff with plain Greek yogurt and it worked fantastic. It doesn't overpower the portabella mushrooms I use, but it may be too strong a taste for plain white mushrooms. |

| If you have an Aldi nearby, check out their new Greek yogurt. It's something like 84 cents for a 6-oz. cup. It's low-fat or non-fat, but so thick and rich that you would think it's full fat. Comes in some flavors, too...blueberry and strawberry. |

| I love Chobani yogurt. It has no corn syrup. I do not buy or eat yogurts with corn syrup. |

When I was in high school my mom used to make yogurt from scratch. She had a special yogurt machine that made it in individual cups--I don't recall, but it was 4 or 5 or 6. She made it almost daily and we often grabbed a cup, dumped on fruit and Grapenuts cereal, and stirred it up for breakfast. It tasted wonderful. This was the 70's when the variety of yogurt on the market today was not yet available.

I am "hooked" on Trader Joe's Honey Greek Yogurt. It's such a treat! Unlike the usual yogurt it makes me feel full for a longer period of time and I like the sour/sweet tatse. I think it's about $1.49 for a 8 oz cup but worth every cent! Sheila |
